Riesling is a white grape variety that originated in the Rhine Valley of Germany and is now found across the world in places such as Austria, Australia, France, Washington, and more.

Riesling is often thought to be a sweet wine, but many expressions exist today. In Germany, these styles range from lightly alcoholic, sweet styles such as Kabinett, Spatlese, and Auslese to rich, lusciously sweet styles such as Eiswein and Trockenbeerenauslese, to bone dry Trocken styles.

Washington state mimics the German stylistic approach, whereas Austria, Alsace, and Australia are known for dry styles with moderate levels of alcohol.

Riesling is best suited to cooler winemaking regions, maximizing on its naturally high, racy acidity. Riesling is a highly aromatic grape, and in order to preserve the aromatics of the wine, this grape is usually fermented and aged in stainless steel or neutral barrels.
